Rohde & Schwarz supports new standards group for open radio equipment interface

Jun 14, 2010 - ETSI and NGMN have announced the creation of a new Industry Specification Group on Open Radio Equipment Interface (ISG ORI) to develop an interface specification enabling interoperability between elements of base stations of cellular mobile network equipment.

In general, mobile radio base stations consist of a baseband unit (BBU) and a radio equipment (RE) device, which, in a distributed base station architecture, is a remote radio head (RRH) or integrated active antenna. Use of distributed radio equipment can lead to significant cost savings for a mobile operator and offers a greater level of flexibility in network design and deployment. The interface that will be defined by the ISG ORI is an important step towards implementing these benefits through widespread deployment of distributed radio equipment.

Rohde & Schwarz offers a complete test setup for RRH verification based on the R&S®SMU200A vector signal generator or the R&S®AMU200A baseband signal generator and the R&S®FSQ signal analyzer. The R&S®EX-IQ-Box digital interface module (model K04) provides the digital baseband connection to the RRH and already supports existing industry standards like the CPRI interface specification.

Rohde & Schwarz joined the ETSI ISG ORI to continue its customer support for new specifications. This group will specify an open interoperable interface for radio equipment in distributed mobile cellular base stations. The aim is to provide more efficient support for existing technologies (GSM, UMTS and LTE) and to ensure support for future enhancements like LTE-Advanced.
